Provo Airport begins new expansion project

SALT LAKE CITY — Construction on a major three-year expansion of Provo Airport began Monday with a ceremonial groundbreaking at the facility that one official said is “desperately” in need of an update.
The existing airport has come a long way since the early 1940s, when an airstrip was built at the request of the military, according to the airport’s website. Commercial service began in 2005 and was expanded with a new terminal in 2022.
In January 2025, Provo officials said they expect the full expansion project to cost $140 million.
For Provo Airport, first things first
The first order of business in 2025 will be expanding the apron, the paved area adjacent to airport terminals, “where aircraft park, load and unload passengers and cargo, and refuel,” according to aviation enthusiasts that maintain the aviationfile.com webpage.
“If any of you have been at the airport, you’ve seen we’ve got 10 aircraft packed on an apron that was designed for four,” Provo Airport Director Brian Torgersen told KSL NewsRadio.
“That will start off our construction project … the apron expansion, which will begin in the next week, and finish up in November.”
Additional automobile parking will also be a priority during the expansion process, according to Togersen.
Looking to the future
As with plans for downtown Salt Lake City, and ongoing new housing construction across the state, the Provo Airport expansion has been planned with an eye toward the future.
Other changes will include upgrades to the airport’s current ticketing and baggage screening process, which Torgersen described as being “cramped” right now.
“We’re just looking to better accommodate the passengers that we’re serving already, but then also build for the future,” said Torgersen.
And yes, more flights
Right now, Allegiant Air, American Airlines and Breeze Airways fly out of Provo Airport. In 2024, it handled nearly 900,000 passengers according to Provo City’s website.
That growth is likely to continue.
“In the coming months and years, our existing airline partners will continue to expand,” Torgerson said, “and we fully anticipate additional airlines as well coming to serve folks here in Provo.”
