SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake County Council inked the deal to purchase the Overstock building in Midvale for $52 million.
County officials say this will save a significant amount of money. It would have cost about $225 million to retrofit their current building on State Street. Even with the cost of remodeling the Overstock building and moving, the total will be less than half of the retrofitting cost.
“The physical cost of the move would probably be about $200,000, and then the retrofitting of the building to make it useful of our purposes would be about $35 million,” said Councilman Jim Bradley.
Councilman Jim Bradley was opposed to building the current building almost 40 years ago.
“Probably in retrospect, [I] imprudently used the old political tactic of accusing my opponent — [who] at that time was Bart Barker — of creating the Taj Mahal.”
Bradley won with that campaign, but later apologized to Barker because he thought the building was good. He approves of the location in Midvale, saying it’s closer to the county’s population center.
All departments and services will be in the new building, making things more convenient. The new site will also have more parking and closer access to a TRAX station.
