SALT LAKE CITY — The future of Smith’s Ballpark stadium is becoming clear. Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall announced that they have picked the “adaptive reuse” plan to overhaul the stadium.
Ballpark Community Council Chair Amy Hawkins said she’s thrilled about the chosen plan.
“I think this is a great compromise. This is exactly what the neighborhood stood up and agreed that we want to see happen. And actually the mayor’s announcement came a little bit ahead of schedule.”

Hawkins said the “adaptive reuse” plan provides open space where the baseball field currently sits. A portion of the stadium seats will remain in place to use for concerts and other community events.
“The focal point of this second option is this large, flexible, central green space, and that sounds so pleasant to me,” said Hawkins.
The field will be a neighborhood square. New buildings will go up, which could house a produce market, a library, and possibly a fitness center.
“I just keep envision walking over there every night and just seeing my neighbors as we stroll around,” Hawkins said.
The mayor said she will announce a more detailed plan of the project in the spring.
