Thermo Fisher Scientific shutting down Ogden facility

OGDEN, Utah — Thermo Fisher Scientific is ceasing operations at its Ogden, Utah site. This comes a little over a year after the facility opened in April 2022.

A company spokesperson confirmed in a statement that the facility’s closure is just temporary.

The statement reads, in part: “To align with current volume demands, we have made the decision to adjust staffing levels at our bioprocessing sites in Utah, including temporarily ceasing operations at our Ogden, Utah site.” 

It’s not yet clear how long the closure will last. 

The statement goes on to say: “Decisions that impact colleagues and their families are never taken lightly. All impacted colleagues will receive job transition support to aid them in finding new opportunities.”

At the time, several local officials, including Senators Mitt Romney and Mike Lee praised Thermo Fisher for opening a facility in Ogden. The company reports it spent $44 million on the facility. 

Thermo Fisher Scientific recently reported that second-quarter revenue was $10.69 billion. That’s 3% lower versus the same quarter last year. 

The company also cut employees earlier this year at a facility in Logan, Utah. 

It’s not yet clear how many people were employed at the Ogden facility. The company reported in 2023 that it had the potential to employ up to 450 people. 

Reaction

Late Wednesday night, Utah Rep. Blake Moore issued a statement on the company’s decision.

“We are very disappointed by the news. We have communicated with Thermo Fisher and have expressed our support for workers to receive help with job transitions. We look forward to increased customer demand so the facility can restart operations.”
