I-15 expansion will cost more than double original UDOT estimate

SALT LAKE CITY — A plan to expand I-15 from Salt Lake City to Farmington is going to cost more than double the amount the Utah Department of Transportation initially pitched.

The plan to expand I-15 has already received $1.7 billion from the Utah legislature. Now, UDOT said it will cost about $3.7 billion.

The information is contained in a draft Environmental Impact Statement that UDOT released. Study Manager Tiffany Pocock said the revised amount came after several years of study in trying to understand what improvements the area needs.

One of the most important is the ability for efficient transport.

“As Utah grows, making sure that goods and services travel on I-15 is successful,” Pocock said. “But also, it’s one tool in our mobility toolbox.”

The draft is available on UDOT’s website. The public is encouraged to provide feedback during a comment period that ends Nov. 13.
