SANDY, Utah — Police in Sandy released body-cam and dash-cam footage on Tuesday from a shooting two weeks ago that left a 16-year-old suspect dead. Sandy Police said the teen was shot after veering a stolen car in the direction of a police officer.

The Sandy Police Department said the 16-year-old stole a U.S. Army van from a recruitment office on Nov. 9.

Officers said they made multiple unsuccessful attempts to stop the teen while he was driving the stolen van.

Police said that while the teen was fleeing from officers, he hit a motorcyclist, “causing severe injury.”

Soon after, the teen started driving the van back toward where the injured motorcyclist and police officers were.

Police said the teen started veering toward an officer standing in the street next to his car. At that point, the officer in the street fired shots at the van, injuring the teen.

The teen was arrested and later died in the hospital. Sandy Police Sgt. Greg Moffitt previously told KSL the teen died from the injuries sustained in the shooting.

The motorcyclist is still recovering.

An investigation into the shooting is still ongoing.

The SPD said the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office will review the investigation to see if force was justified.
