Former Aggie football player could face charges for violating protective order

LOGAN, Utah — A former USU football player could face additional jail time for violating a protective order against a woman he’s convicted of sexually assaulting his freshman year of college. 

Devoney Stanley is currently in the Cache County Jail serving a one-year sentence after pleading guilty to forcible sexual abuse.

At sentencing earlier this spring, the judge issued a protective order against Stanley. According to a probable cause statement, under this protective order, Stanley is “prohibited from harassing, telephoning, contacting, or otherwise communicating with the Protected Party, directly, indirectly, or through a third party.”

The probable cause statement reports that Stanley called the woman twice on June 26. She answered both calls but did not accept them when she realized they came from jail.  

When interviewed by Logan police, Stanley said he made the calls by mistake. He said he had called his sister earlier that day asking for a friend’s phone number from his blocked list. Stanley said he called the number his sister gave him and later had to ask for the right contact, saying he didn’t know who the original number belonged to. The record shows he did make a call to his friend once he received the correct contact. 

Violating a protective order is a 3rd-degree felony. Stanley will appear in court on July 19th.
