Girl hurt after being hit by vehicle in Ivins, fourth incident this month in area

IVINS, Utah — Police in Ivins say an 11-year-old girl was struck by a vehicle Tuesday morning. And it’s the fourth time a pedestrian has been hit by a vehicle in the area this month.

Police say the incident happened at 6:30 a.m. The girl was riding her scooter and was in a crosswalk at 100 W. Center Street when a Dodge Dakota was southbound on 100 West. Police also say the vehicle made a left-hand turn onto Center Street, striking the girl in the middle of the crosswalk.

Sgt. Reed Briggs, of the Ivins Police Department, said the girl suffered injuries to one of her legs, her head and face. However, he was unsure how serious those injuries were. Briggs says the girl was seen at the hospital but is unsure if she was transported by ambulance or if her parents took her.

According to Briggs, it was still dark out at the time of the incident and the girl was wearing dark clothing. Briggs also says the driver was enroute to work and did not see the child.

According to a posting on the Ivins-Santa Clara Public Safety Facebook page, Tuesday’s incident is the fourth auto-pedestrian collision in the area this month. The other incidents occurred on Aug. 9, Aug. 11 and Aug. 16.

Of the four incidents, three of them, including Tuesday’s accident, happened before 7 a.m.

“It’s apparent that these incidents are occurring mainly in the early morning hours,” a statement read in the Facebook posting. “For your safety and the safety of others, we ask that you check and double-check before driving through and crossing into an intersection. Be aware of your surroundings.”
