SALT LAKE CITY — A graffitied racial slur painted under an overpass in Herriman that has been up since Pioneer Day weekend is now painted over.

Herriman City Public Information Officer, Jonathan LaFollette said the graffiti stayed up so long because they missed it.

“It seems like this one might just have been missed,” LaFollette said.

According to LaFollette, there were multiple reports of vandalism made over that Pioneer Day weekend. While cleaning up those other vandalized areas, they missed the area under the Mountain View Corridor overpass.

“We realized that it had not been handled. We followed up with the graffiti team, they came right away and looked at it,” LaFollette said. “It looked like someone else had gotten to it first.”

That someone was being the Utah Department of Transportation, who painted over the graffiti.

LaFollette said if a person finds graffiti to report it. Who the person reports the graffiti to depends on where they are. Furthermore, If you are unsure who to report the vandalism to call the city or county LaFollette said.

“I mean it really comes down to who owns the property. If it’s a freeway, it’s most likely a UDOT property,” LaFollette said. “People can feel free to reach out to them. But we understand it can be kind of confusing who has purview over different pieces of property.”

Furthermore, LaFollette said if you see vandalism, another option is to paint over it yourself with a matching paint color.
