Herriman man accused of animal cruelty after allegedly pepper-spraying a dog

SALT LAKE CITY — A 55-year-old man in Herriman has been accused of animal cruelty after allegedly pepper-spraying a dog.
Herriman police said they were called on Tuesday by the dog’s owner, who said the animal was fenced off in their backyard at the time.
Using images from a neighbor’s security footage, the dog’s owner made a social media post to get help identifying the suspect.
“Police are looking for this guy that Bear sprayed my 20 lb. Golden Doodle in the face through my fenced yard,” the owner wrote in a Facebook post.

That post led to a tip that identified the suspect as 55-year-old Raymond Torres.
Police said there was no evidence that the dog was a danger to Torres’ safety.
“There was no information discovered during the investigation that suggested (pepper) spraying the dog was necessary for Mr. Torres’ safety,” police wrote in a news release.
Torres stands accused of animal cruelty and disorderly conduct.
“We appreciate the efforts of the victim and our vigilant community in helping us resolve this case,” police wrote.
