Man in critical condition after being shot by officer during SLC traffic stop

SALT LAKE CITY — A man was hospitalized, fighting a life-threatening wound on Tuesday morning after an officer shot him during a traffic stop from which he had run, police said.
The Salt Lake City Police Department said an officer attempted to pull the driver over at approximately 11 p.m. on Monday. The officer tried to stop the diver near 600 West and South Temple.
The driver did not stop, police said, and instead drove south on 600 West.
“The car fled and failed to yield to their attempt to stop it,” said Salt Lake City Police Sgt. Miles Southworth. “… The officer did not pursue the car at that time. They located the car just a couple blocks away, crashed into multiple cars.”
Officers later found the abandoned car near 70 S. 600 West.
The officers, including a K9 unit, searched the area. Police said the officer yelled for the man to stop multiple times, but the he kept running.
“The officer gave that individual commands to stop, and that person fled on foot and failed to comply,” Southworth said. “… At some point, there was an incident between that officer and that individual, and our officer fired at least one shot at that person and struck that individual.”
Officers immediately began lifesaving measures. An ambulance took the suspect to a local hospital in stable condition, but his condition worsened.
“(At) around 3:00 a.m. this morning, we received an update that the suspect’s condition deteriorated and his injuries are now considered life-threatening.”
