Man sentenced to total of 100 years in prison for killing his family in 2020

GRANTSVILLE, Utah — The man who murdered his mother and siblings in their Grantsville home in January 2020 has been sentenced to 100 years in prison.

KSL TV’s Dan Rascon reported that a judge sentenced Colin Jeffery “CJ” Haynie to 25 years to life for each family member he murdered — his mother and three siblings. Those sentences will be served consecutively.

As reported by KSL.com, the judge also sentenced Haynie to 25 years to life for the attempted murder of his father, Colin, but that sentence will be served concurrently.

Haynie was only 16 years old when prosecutors say he skipped school to wait for each of his family members to come home. 

He then shot them one by one, killing his 52-year-old mother, Consuelo, and his siblings, 15-year-old Alexis, 14-year-old Matthew, and 12-year-old Milan.

Haynie admitted to the murders in a plea deal he struck with prosecutors in July 2022.

His father, Colin Haynie is the only survivor. He spoke with KSL NewsRadio just before laying his family to rest days after the killings.

“At first this seemed to be a family tragedy, but as time has gone on, it has become very clear that it has affected far more than my family or even the local community.”

Haynie faces several life sentences for the killings. Sentencing begins around 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
