New warrants provide more information on shooting deaths of mother, son in Saratoga Springs

SALT LAKE CITY — New search warrants are providing more details about law enforcement’s investigation into the shooting deaths of Eli Painter, 8, and his mother, Jessica Lyman, 44. 

The mother and son were found shot in their home on March 28. Painter was pronounced dead at the scene. Lyman died in the hospital a couple of days later.

Saratoga Springs police have been reluctant to share new information, citing the sensitive nature of the case and their investigation, but KSL has obtained new search warrants that are providing a few new details about the case.

According to the warrants, police have obtained and reviewed doorbell camera footage that belonged to Lyman’s neighbor. Investigators say the video captured a “figure” walking in front of Lyman’s home just after 2:15 a.m. on March 28, which is roughly eight hours before police found Painter and Lyman shot in the home.

The documents said the footage was too far away to identify the person. Investigators are still working to obtain footage from Lyman’s doorbell camera.

According to the warrants, police also believe Painter was dead around four hours by the time police arrived around 10:15 that morning.

Warrants obtained by KSL last week revealed police took other items in as evidence, including Lyman’s phone, which investigators believe may have been used to communicate with someone before the shootings.

Saratoga Springs police are calling this a “double homicide case,” but they say they “will not jeopardize the integrity of the case by releasing any sensitive information before it is appropriate,” a recent statement from the department read.

Police said they will provide more details when they find it appropriate.
