Slight increase in crime on U of U campus from previous year, report says

SALT LAKE CITY — A new report released by the University of Utah shows a slight increase in crime from the previous year.
University of Utah Chief Safety Officer Keith Squires says it’s crucial to remember the campus covers a lot of ground.
“Right now, about 50 percent of our calls for police services are generated from hospital needs,” he said.
After two years of reduced in-person learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this previous year’s information was the first year with back-to-normal campus residency numbers.
Despite the slight increase in crime, Squires says he isn’t concerned yet.
“And now we are seeing that those numbers are increasing,” he said. “But I feel very good about the consistency when we look back at previous years.”
