Springville man charged with stabbing friend during drunken dispute

SPRINGVILLE — A Springville man was charged Tuesday with stabbing his friend multiple times during a drunken dispute.
Donald Lee Jones, 48, is charged in 4th District Court with attempted murder, a first-degree felony; assault on a police officer, a class A misdemeanor; assault, a class B misdemeanor; and public intoxication, a class C misdemeanor.
On April 11, Jones invited a friend over to his trailer in Springville.
“Both parties were intoxicated, and a dispute arose in which the defendant ‘tried to beat up’ (the friend) by hitting him. (The friend) hit the defendant in response and told him to go lie down and get some sleep,” according to charging documents.
At that point, the victim believed the fight was over. But that’s when Jones “‘came at him’ with a steak knife and stabbed him with it multiple times,” the charges allege.
The man went to a neighboring residence to call 911. Police who responded to the scene saw three “stab wounds on the left side of (the man’s) chest, his upper right chest by his collarbone, and the upper part of his abdomen,” according to the charges. A steak knife with a 6- to 7-inch blade was recovered in the trailer, police said.
Police say Jones was “intoxicated and uncooperative” and threatened the arresting officers by making comments such as “telling the officer to remove his handcuffs so they could fight,” according to the charges.
When asked why he was “covered in blood,” Jones told police “he drank too much and fell. When questioned further, he stated he was alone and no one was with him in the trailer,” according to a police booking affidavit.
