Taylorsville man faces federal charges for shooting, car chase

SALT LAKE CITY — The 26-year-old Taylorsville man investigators say led police on a dangerous car chase after a shooting Aug. 14 has been indicted on felony charges Wednesday.
Maxwell Brandon Archibald is facing one count of carjacking and another for discharging a firearm during a confrontation that happened at a Maverik gas station near South Union Avenue and Union Park Avenue in Midvale, court documents say.
Someone with a gunshot wound told Unified police officers that about 5 p.m., Archibald and two friends were in a car when an argument occurred over who wanted to drive, according to the indictment.
Archibald “became increasingly upset, and a physical altercation inside the car commenced,” an investigator wrote. The man took out a Glock 22, .40-caliber handgun and attempted to fire at the person he was arguing with, but the gun was pushed away as it went off, court documents said.
Investigators say while the owner of the vehicle fled, Archibald fired another shot into the arm of the person he was confronting before taking off in the car.
Unified Police Sgt. Aymee Race told KSL the car drove into oncoming traffic multiple times, including on I-215, before hitting spike strips on Van Winkle Expressway near 5800 South in Murray. Maxwell ran away, according to Race, and was found in a nearby garage. Charging documents say police found the gun matching the one used in the shooting.
