Utah is number ten in the nation for most money lost by victims by cybercrime....

Utah is number 25 on the list of states with the most cybercrime.

SALT LAKE CITY — In a new survey, Utah is about halfway down the list of states with the most cybercrime. According to Thirdpartytrust, a risk management platform for business and vendors, the state ranks 22nd.

The company also said that Utah ranks 10th in the nation for the most money lost by victims of cybercrime.

Thirdpartytrust.com defines cybercrime as any malicious activity done via a computer or the internet, such as email scams and identity theft.

The company’s survey of over 1,000 Americans found North Dakotans suffered the most losses by victims.  New York, California, Connecticut and Vermont rounded out the top five.

Those rankings come from dividing each state’s total losses to cybercrime by the number of victims. The Beehive State, at number ten, averages over $17,500.

Utah fared better when it came to actual cybercrimes committed, coming in at number 22.  Nevada topped the list for cybercrime, followed by Alaska, Iowa, Florida and Delaware.

That same survey found that 58% of respondents had been a victim of a cybercrime, and 68% know someone who has been scammed online.

When it comes to non-payment/non-delivery scams, 61% of respondents said they’d bought something online and not received the item. Additionally, 15% have sold something and not received payment.

Victims of scams lost an average of $285 each. Nearly 30% of respondents said they sent money to someone online who they’ve never met in person, spending an average of $312. The survey reported that most Americans have fallen victim to a scam twice.

Tips to avoid being a cybercrime victim include using longer, more complex passwords and using two-factor authentication.
