SALT LAKE CITY — As the world becomes more interconnected, what can you do to thwart a cyberattack on your online accounts or business ahead of time. An expert shares his tips on how to be cyber-ready.

When the subject of preparing for emergency arises, we think of floods, fires and earthquakes. We don’t think about cybersecurity as part of being ready.

Codefresh co-founder and cyber security expert Dan Garfield joined Inside Sources host Boyd Matheson to talk about being cyber-ready.

Garfield said the typical cyber-victim is older than 65.

“They get into situations where maybe they’re asked to install something. Somebody calls pretending to be someone else. Those kinds of things are typically the most effective at scaring people out of money,” he said.

If you want to know if you have been the victim of a cyber-security breach, check out haveibeenpwned.com and enter your email to find out.

“The truth is that your data is going to get leaked if you have an any kind of online footprint,” he said. “My data has been leaked because websites where I have created accounts have been hacked.”

To keep hacking damage to a minimum, Garfield recommends using a password manager, which generate strong passwords for website accounts.

Prepare for the unexpected emergency or disaster at BeReady.Utah.gov.
