Wreckage of missing aircraft found in southern Utah, one person dead

On Thursday, the Washington County Sheriff's Office found the wreckage of a small aircraft that went missing on Wednesday. The lone occupant on the plane did not survive.
NEW HARMONY, Utah — Washington County emergency personnel on Thursday found the wreckage of a small-engine aircraft that had gone missing a day earlier north of New Harmony. Emergency crews also found the body of the lone occupant on the plane.
According to a news release, Washington County Dispatch received a call around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday about a missing plane that hadn’t arrived at its destination. The aircraft had left St. George around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.
On Wednesday night, deputies from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and Iron County Sheriff’s Office searched the area of the last known GPS coordinates. However, a crash site was not found.
On Thursday, the Washington County Search and Rescue team went back to the area just south of the border of Iron and Washington counties and found a crash site.
The identity of the pilot has not been released.
Federal and state investigators have been notified of the crash and have responded to the scene.
No other information on the wreckage or the aircraft was provided.
The investigation is ongoing.
