Alpine School District considers closing two elementary schools

AMERICAN FORK, Utah — Utah’s largest school district is looking into the possibility of closing two elementary schools. Voters will make the decision in a matter of weeks.
The Alpine School District Board voted on Sept. 17, 2024, to study the feasibility and options around potentially closing Windsor and Lindon Elementary Schools.
The two schools occupy two of the older buildings in the district.
“We do owe this community [Lindon] a study because this is one of our older buildings which has historically had problems,” said board member Ada Wilson. “I think they deserve better.”
Wilson also noted the age of Windsor Elementary and suggested keeping the site for future use because of its location.
However, one board member voted against the proposal to study a potential closure of Lindon Elementary. Board member Mark Clement voiced concern because one of the schools hosts a dual language immersion program, while the other hosts a learning lab for gifted students.
“There’s really no way of moving the students…without getting rid of both the DLI and ALL program,” Clement said. “There’s just not room there.”
The board ultimately voted to study a potential closure of both schools.
At the time of the vote, the study was expected to take 90 days. The board is scheduled to take action on the matter during their meeting on Dec. 17.
However, Election Day could possibly play a role in the final decision.
Voters in Lehi, Alpine, Highland, American Fork, Draper and Cedar Hills will decide whether or not to split off and form their own school district.
Voters in Saratoga Springs, Eagle Mountain, Cedar Fort and Fairfield will also decide whether or not to form their own district.
