Midvale standoff suspect dead from self-inflicted wound, police say

MIDVALE, Utah — Police have told KSL that the standoff in Midvale has ended. Police said the suspect involved in the standoff, a 26-year-old man, died from a self-inflicted injury.
Police told KSL TV‘s Karah Brackin that the standoff lasted about 12 hours. Police said the situation originally began with a call about a suicidal man in his car.
The situation escalated, police said, after the man allegedly rammed into a police car, fled from officers and barricaded himself in his home at 8555 South Monroe Street.
After hours of negotiating, police said the man died from a self-inflicted wound. No other injuries were reported.
Copperview Elementary School was put on a remote learning schedule due to the standoff and nearby residents were told to shelter in place.
Canyons School District announced Friday morning that there would be no in-school classes due to the police investigation in the area.
An overnight police investigation has restricted traffic on the streets near Copperview Elementary. At the request of police, and for the safety of the school community, Copperview will have a remote-learning day today.

Breakfast and lunch services is available for students at no cost and will be served at Midvale Elementary located at 7830 Chapel St. Breakfast is from 8 to 8:40 a.m. Lunch is served from 10:50 to 1 p.m.
Canyons District Public Information Officer, Jeff Heaney confirmed the move to KSL NewsRadio.
“We understand there is an ongoing police investigation in the area surrounding Copperview Elementary School,” said Heaney.
“At the request of police and for the safety of the school community this morning we announced there would be a remote-learning schedule,” he said noting that teachers would be contacting families with instructions.
“It’s really a precaution and we are working with police on their investigation. But just to be safe and also to make sure we’re reducing traffic in that area, we pivoted to the online learning schedule today.”
