SALT LAKE CITY — The University of Utah is trying to “close the skills gap” by offering continuing education courses for busy professionals.

As technology continues to advance, The University of Utah is partnering with Ziplines Education to offer 10-week courses covering things like digital marketing and business analytics. The courses are not for academic credit and they have no prerequisites. Additionally, they are online and self-guided.

“When you finish, you have a professional certificate from the University of Utah,” said Dr. Ashley Seitz Kramer, the director of professional education in University Connected Learning. “You can put that on your resume…It will absolutely demonstrate to current and future employers that you are very proactive.”

She said the goal is to help people feel more prepared in an ever-changing tech world.

“It just seems like a really great fit for the busy working professional who just wants that competitive edge, wants to get that raise, wants to get that promotion, wants to get that leadership position, or just wants to stay competitive in their field,” said Kramer.

According to Kramer, 94% of students who take these courses immediately use the skills they’ve developed in their jobs. Additionally, she said three-quarters of them met their career goals in six months.
