Utah bus driver wins third place in international safety competition

SALT LAKE CITY — In a few weeks,  students get on their buses to head back to school. A Utah bus driver from the Canyons School District was just named one of the best bus drivers in the world.

Jeremy Klung took third place in an international bus driver competition where he had to maneuver his bus through various obstacles. Additionally, Klung had to park in some difficult situations. 

Coming from a family full of UTA workers, Klung said transportation always fascinated him. The Canyons School District hired Klung in 2012. Since that time, he said he has been perfecting his skills.

Recently, he decided to compete in his district’s Road-eo.

“Basically, you take a 40-foot school bus around a big parking lot with a bunch of obstacles set up. And you can’t hit these obstacles. You have to do a few of them in a certain amount of time,” said Klung.

After winning, Klung advanced to the national competition. Then he went to the international competition held in Texas.

Klung showed off his skills and took third place in the transit bus category.

” I was just as shocked with that result as I was with the district and state competitions here in Utah,” said Klung. 

And after all that, it’s back to business as usual — driving kids to summer camps, and back to school in less than two weeks.
