SALT LAKE CITY — There are still openings for crossing guards across the state and back to school is just days away. Casey Warrens, Assistant Chief of Police for Riverdale City, said it’s a difficult position to fill. The crossing guard schedule can deter applicants since guards have to be in place morning, midday and afternoon.
“It is hard to find the right person who has some flexibility at these positions because, you know, you may have to come and go at least two times, three times in one day.”
Warrens said they sometimes have to get creative if they don’t have a crossing guard in place.
“Even our police officers at times will help fill in those voids,” he said.
He pointed out that some people don’t realize how important the position really is.
“When we don’t have people that can step in and fill these positions,” he said, “the biggest risk is just getting our kids to school safely.”
Warren feels lucky that Riverdale has fully staffed their crossing guard positions, but knows of many jurisdictions around the state that are still looking to fill the role.
