WEST JORDAN, Utah — West Jordan Elementary is closing its gate for the last time at the end of the school year, due to safety issues within the infrastructure.

The President of the Board of Education for the Jordan School District Tracy Miller told KSL News an independent assessor deemed the structural integrity of the temporary modules, used as classrooms, not up to scratch.

“There is deterioration in the floor framing elements as well as the wood framing,” she said.

“It wasn’t supposed to last as long as it has”

The school was originally designed as a short-term solution to a climbing population in the 1980s.

Tracy said the school community is close and it was a very difficult call to make and will aid students with their transition by any means possible.

For the parents of West Jordan Elementary, the school is more than an institution of education, it’s a tight-knit social circle for both them and their children.

Michelle Quinney a mother of three and her youngest attends West Jordan Elementary.

He is in the fifth grade and because of the school closure will now have to move schools at the end of this year and then again at the end of next year for middle school.

“I really do worry for those kids… what will their circle look like next year?” Melanie told KSL News Radio. “For those kids who have to move 2 years in a row that’s a really difficult thing to understand”
