SALT LAKE CITY — The Winter Sports School in Park City is working toward a major expansion that will allow more students to attend its classes.
This $5 million project will add almost 9,000 square feet of classrooms and facilities.
“We currently have space for about 120 students but that’s bursting at the seams in our current physical space and we would like to be able to expand that,” said Tim Gaylord, a member of the school’s Board of Trustees. “Potentially, the school would grow to as many as 160 total students.”
Gaylord said the expansion will allow more students to get their high school education while training to be world-class athletes.
“It’s a great option for students … [who] are involved in all these winter activities that are so important to not only the Park City community but all of Utah.”
And, Gaylord said having the capacity for more students will help Utah produce even more elite athletes. That’s an added bonus with the Olympics on the way.
“We’ve had past NCAA champions, we’ve had past Olympians in numerous different sports and some real home-grown ones,” he said.
The goal is to start the expansion sometime in 2025 but the school is still working on getting $2 million more in funding.
