SALT LAKE CITY–It’s crunch time on Capitol Hill as the Utah 2023 Legislative Session enters its second to last day.
Utah House Majority Leader, Rep. Mike Shultz, R-Hooper, told KSL at Night one of the biggest highlights during the Utah 2023 Legislative Session has been tax cuts.
“We did a total combined $800 million in tax reductions,” Shultz said. “I have a bill on the calendar… that drops the gas tax by two cents.”
Shultz also said housing is an issue they need to address during the 2023 Legislative Session.
“We’ve got to figure out a way to help our kids and grandkids get into houses,” Shultz said. And there is one bill that could help first-time home buyers with funds to buy newly constructed houses.
Other bills to keep an eye on in the final two days of this session include:
- disband the Unified Police Department,
- helping the homeless during the winter across the largest state counties,
- opening the door to full-day kindergarten,
- ending the sales tax on food (if voters approve a constitutional change), and
- limiting abortion clinics in Utah.
