SALT LAKE CITY — The voter registration deadline is quickly approaching. According to Salt Lake County Clerk Lannie Chapman, voters must register before Oct. 25 to participate in this year’s election.
Things to know ahead of voter registration deadline
If someone has not participated in a federal election in the past four years, their registration status is likely inactive. Those unsure of their registration status can check at vote.utah.gov.
Furthermore, the county clerk’s office removes names from the voter rolls of anyone who has not voted in over eight years.
“Or [if] you moved and we’ve received mail back from your old residence saying you no longer reside there; we’re going to make you inactive until we can verify your new address,” said Chapman.
According to Chapman, the number of disqualified voters is surprising.
“For a county the size of ours, it’s not uncommon for tens of thousands [of voters removed] because again, people move, people don’t vote. We want to have the cleanest roles that we possibly can.”
Additionally, it’s important that voters check the accuracy of their information to ensure their vote-by-mail ballot gets to the right place.
Ballots will begin hitting mailboxes on Tuesday, Oct. 15.
