SALT LAKE CITY — As the days to Election Day tick down, local election officials want to make sure Utahns are getting their voting information from trustworthy sources.

Davis County Clerk Brian McKenzie spoke to KSL at Night about how voters can prevent misinformation.

Firstly, McKenzie said voters with questions can always go to their county clerk.

“What I always tell voters is I say, ‘Look, come and learn for yourself. Come and see for yourself. Come and ask those questions,” he said. “There is no question off limits.”

Finding trustworthy voting information

Voters should also take time to educate themselves using trustworthy sources, McKenzie said.

“Don’t just take anything that you read off of the internet as the truth, because sometimes it’s not.”

McKenzie highlighted local media stations as good sources of information, particularly because they are part of the community they are reporting on.

For national media sources, McKenzie recommended seeking out balanced coverage.

“Seek out those national media that are trusted, that you feel comfortable with not just because they are sharing the things that may be popular to you, but that they’re sharing it in a way that is information and shares both sides of the story.”

The best one-stop-shop place Utahns can go to for answers is the state’s voter information website, McKenzie said.

The website includes information on voter registration, important dates and deadlines, and what’s on your ballot.

“It will link to candidates’ websites, their bios, to where you can do some research through a trusted source of information. Information that those candidates have provided.”

McKenzie also recommended checking out the Utah Judicial Performance Evaluation Commission website to find information on judges.
