Hundreds rally against proposed constitutional amendment

SALT LAKE CITY — Days after the Utah Legislature voted yes, hundreds of people gathered at the Capitol, urging Utahns to vote no about the proposed changes to ballot initiatives.

The rally is apart of what Better Boundaries Utah is calling the “Vote No” campaign. 

Supporters waved signs with slogans like “power to the people” and “keep democracy.” Better Boundaries board member Ryan Bell told the hundreds in attendance there’s one core principal in the constitution that won’t ever change.

“All political power is inherent in the people,” he said. 

When Executive Director Katie Wright was asked if they’re concerned about funding on the other side, she acknowledged that the legislature has been strategic in their messaging and thanked supporters for donating to their cause.

“Our constitutional rights are sacred, and we will not give them away to politicians who think they know better than us, the voters,” she said.

Senator Daniel Thatcher was one of a handful of republicans who crossed party lines to vote against the measure. He told people at the rally that their vote isn’t about personal feelings towards the legislature or political ideology.

“The question before us is: is there a limit? Either there is a limit and it is this reasonable boundary, or there is no limit and we surrender the final bulwark forever,” Sen. Thatcher said.
