SALT LAKE CITY — Republican incumbent Rep. Blake Moore is running against challenger Paul Miller to become the GOP nominee for Utah’s 1st Congressional District. The primary election this year in Utah will be held on June 25.

More on Moore

Blake Moore was born in Ogden, Utah. Since January 2021, he has represented Utah’s 1st Congressional District.

Some of Moore’s political history includes voting against the second impeachment of then-President Donald Trump.

On May 19, 2021, Moore voted for bipartisan legislation establishing the January 6 commission to investigate the U.S. Capitol attack. But Moore voted against the Democratic-led House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack.

Top issues for Moore:

  • Moore wants House members to vote on the Remain in Mexico Act, which requires asylum seekers to stay in Mexico while awaiting a court date inside the United States.
  • The candidate said he is pleased the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe. v. Wade and transferred to states the power to manage abortions.
  • Moore advocates making permanent the tax cuts in former President Trump’s Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which he says would provide the economy with a “solid footing to grow.”
  • Moore co-sponsored the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act, which sets forth requirements for the lawful concealed carrying (of a handgun) across state lines.

The primary challenger to northern Utah’s House seat

Growing up in Layton, Paul Miller now resides in South Ogden, Utah. According to his campaign website, he works in the electrical industry

Top issues for Miller:

  • According to his campaign website, Miller would change the wording of the 14th Amendment, Section 1, to read that babies born in the U.S. are not made U.S. citizens unless their parents are U.S. citizens themselves.
  • Miller believes in the right to own any weapon to repel tyranny. “Guns save more lives than they take every year,” he said.
  • On U.S. energy, Miller said American companies should be allowed to explore, drill for and process oil inside the United States, instead of relying on “foreign adversaries” as energy sources.
  • Miller is anti-abortion and believes life begins at conception. He said if elected he will vote “no” on any abortion-related legislation. He is also pro invitro fertilization.
