SALT LAKE CITY — For Elizabeth Nelson, 11 minutes is basically a lifetime.
“It’s a personal story for me,” she said. “My mom was eleven minutes before … she was driving and she was eleven minutes before getting to the abortion clinic.”
That abortion clinic would’ve been the end for Nelson.
However, her mother didn’t make it to the clinic.
“Her car broke down and she took that as a sign and she was like, ‘what am I doing?’ And it kind of shocked her back to life. And now I’m here,” Nelson said.

This is why, no matter how cold it was, she wanted to attend this rally at the Utah Capitol Building on Saturday morning.
It was organized by Pro-Life Utah.
“We will fight,” said one of the rally speakers to a cheering crowd.
The group says it supports protecting unborn babies and their mothers by seeking to make abortion illegal.
They also wanted to draw attention to the number of abortions that have happened in the state since a Third District Court blocked a Utah law banning abortions except in certain circumstances.
“Over 4,000 babies were aborted in 2023 in Utah. 8,000 babies have been aborted since our trigger abortion law was enjoined in 2022,” said Mary Taylor, the President of Pro-Life Utah. “So, what we want to get out is that we all need to stand up and protect the unborn.”
Some pro-choice supporters also showed up at the rally, holding signs to make sure their side of the issue was heard.
“Mind your business. My body, my choice,” one pro-choice supporter said to the pro-life crowd.
Those at the rally eventually walked the block around the Capitol building.

“I’m very impressed. There’s a lot of people coming out,” said Samara Kassuhn, one of the people supporting the rally.
Police provided an escort to keep everyone safe.
Meanwhile, Nelson, whose mother put her up for adoption, feels like she knows what safe really means.
“I want to be an example because my life is great and it’s because my mom chose life and it’s important to get that message out,” Nelson said.
Those who are pro-life said they will continue to fight for what they believe.
Those on the other side, pro-choice, said they will also do the same.
