Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill announces the Prosecutors for Prosecutors Campaign at the District Attorney's Office in Salt Lake City on Thursday, July 27, 2023. The campaign aims to save the lives of prosecutors and their families being hunted by the Taliban in Afghanistan.
SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill is leading an effort in the form of a non-profit called Prosecutors for Prosecutors to bring thousands of prosecutors from Afghanistan to the U.S.
Gill says there are thousands of prosecutors abandoned in Afghanistan. He spoke side by side Thursday with a former Afghanistan prosecutor, Yama Rayeen.
“Prosecutors and those involved in the justice system are victims of targeted attacks and assassinations,” Rayeen says.
Additionally, Rayeen says these attacks and assassinations are continuing. For Gill, that makes it personal.
“They’re now paying a price with their lives and their family’s lives for embracing that idea of freedom and democracy,” Gill says.
The non-profit hopes to raise $15 million. With this money, it hopes to bring 1,500 prosecutors out of Afghanistan to the U.S. and give them jobs here.
