SALT LAKE CITY — Utah’s Democratic leaders say they support Texas democrats in their fight against redistricting in the Lone Star State. Texas leaders fled to stall a vote on redrawn political maps that highly favor republicans.
Listen to the interview with Democratic Sen. Luz Escamilla.
“Here in Utah, the battle against partisan gerrymandering is all too familiar. We remain in court today, fighting for fair congressional boundaries. Across the country, the outcome has been the same: maps drawn to secure political advantage rather than to represent the voices and communities they are meant to serve.”
Escamilla expressed concern about the alarming government overreach aimed at gaining GOP congressional seats.
“It’s concerning because it is outside of how we do this,” she said. “The Constitution is so clear on the role of the states and how they draw their maps, but not in the middle—before even a census comes in place, right? I mean, it’s been established that that’s the process. So, this is just scary on so many levels.”
