Lack of snow allows UDOT to use budget for road repairs

SALT LAKE CITY — There is a silver lining to the dark cloud that is Utah’s current lack of snow — extra time and funds to go to repairing Utah’s roads.

John Gleason with the Utah Department of Transportation said it had budgeted $30 million this year for snow removal as part of their maintenance budget. Thanks to the lack of snow, the department has only used $7.5 million.

Those additional funds aren’t being wasted.

UDOT is already using the rest of the money to seal cracks, repair potholes and catch up on general repairs and maintenance that were placed on the back burner.

While maintenance crews work on these issues year-round, they typically cannot tackle large projects until a new budget is approved in the summer.

Gleason said drivers that see potholes or other problems on the road can report the issues to UDOT via their Click ‘N Fix website, but only after they finish their drive.
