UDOT announces it will double EV charging infrastructure in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Department of Transportation will double Utah’s EV charging infrastructure capacity by the end of 2024.
The demand for electric vehicles in the U.S. keeps growing, and it’s the same in Utah. In a press release, UDOT said the number of electric vehicles in Utah has grown an average of 48% per year since 2015.
UDOT is planning to add 15 new charging sites with funds provided by the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Formula Program.
“The future is coming, and these 15 new fast-charging sites will help ensure Utah will be ready for it,” UDOT Executive Director Carlos Braceras said.
According to UDOT, Utah has received around $36 million in federal funding for additions to its EV charging infrastructure. Private businesses needed a 20% private match in investment to apply for the funds. UDOT had 75 applications to match their private fund with the NEVI funding.
The proposed sites will allow drivers to travel anywhere along Utah’s interstates, as well as US-6 and US-191.

In the first phase of the project, UDOT will use $17.5 million to build EV charging access every 50 miles along Utah’s interstate highways.
