Draper care center evacuated after fire in residence

SALT LAKE CITY — The Draper Rehabilitation and Care Center was evacuated on Wednesday after a fire broke out in a resident’s room.
According to Kevin Holt, Battalion Chief for Draper Fire, the sprinklers activated shortly after the fire started and extinguished the blaze. Holt said the fire department cut power to the southern side of the care facility due to the water, leaving the northern power online.
All residents were evacuated, and one man was taken to the hospital as a precaution. Holt said that man had a history of fainting episodes and “it was going to be easier to facilitate his needs at a hospital under supervision,” rather than specifically being related to the fire.
Residents who were in wheelchairs were transported to the nearby Draper Elementary, while those that were bedridden were moved to the northern wing of the care facility to a safe spot away from the scene.
Holt said the fire department is working on determining a cause of the fire.
