SALT LAKE CITY — A fire broke out near Cottonwood Heights on Thursday morning, prompting Sandy firefighters to tackle the blaze while United Fire Authority raced to the scene.
According to Benjamin Porter, Public Information Officer with the Unified Fire Authority, the firefighters were forced to tackle the blaze from the outside, as heavy smoke and flames were already visible from inside the home.
Firefighters made an interior search of the home and cleared multiple floors.
The homeowners said all people were out of the house. A dog and a cat living inside the home were also located.
“The dog was able to get out very easily,” Porter said. “The cat, however, was unresponsive… Our crews, they were able to administer oxygen… [and] revive the cat. That cat has gone on to veterinarian care.”
Shortly before 2:30, firefighters were still actively fighting the blaze, with Porter explaining that “a bigger home can produce a bigger fire.”
Firefighters are keeping an eye on the wind to ensure the fire doesn’t spread further. There is no threat to neighboring houses at this time.
Porter said the home is not fully engulfed and that “a lot” of the home is still standing.
According to Sandy Police Sgt Michael Olsen, a cul-de-sac close to the fire was closed, with police managing traffic.
Wildland Assignment was also dispatched after reports came in of the fire spreading from the home to the surrounding grass.
“This is going to be a big incident for a while,” Porter said.
