Hikers rescued after flash flood hits Little Wildhorse Canyon

SALT LAKE CITY — A search and rescue operation ensured that 10 individuals made it out of Little Wildhorse Canyon in Goblin Valley State Park after a flash flood swept through on Friday.

The flash flood was caused by a “very isolated storm” that formed over the canyon, forcing the hikers to seek high ground to escape the floodwaters, according a Facebook post published by Goblin Valley State Park.

According to the post, six individuals were quickly found by park rangers after calling the Emery County Sheriff’s Office for rescue.

The Facebook post reports that following the initial rescue of the six hikers, the Emery County Search and Rescue and DNR Law Enforcement began searching for the remaining four individuals. These four managed to make their way out of the canyon on their own shortly after dark.

“This was a scary time for everyone involved,” the post said, “and a good reminder of the power of nature and risk involved in slot canyons!”
