SALT LAKE CITY — Today’s triple-digit degree forecast caught a few people off guard.

Historically we don’t usually get triple-digit temperatures this early along the Wasatch Front, but we have for the last few years.

According to Weather Spark, the historic average for June 12 is in the low-80s. Even though it seems pretty early in June for a triple-digit day, this isn’t the earliest 100-degree day in state history.

According to the National Weather Service, that record belongs to June 4, 2021, which broke the previous record of June 5, 2020.  The hottest June 12 on record was just two years ago, at 102 degrees. That same summer we went on to reach 100 degrees or higher on 34 different days.

On average, Salt Lake City only has one triple-digit temperature during the month of June. According to Extreme Weather Watch the coldest it’s ever been on June 12, was 38 degrees in 2001.

Tips on beating the heat

We asked a few people how they are beating the heat.

James Totten advised people to, “Drink lots of water, six bottles minimal,” and get “A neck cooler. My AC doesn’t work on my car currently. So I roll both windows all the way down, turn the tunes on and wrap that around my neck to keep me cool.”

“Heading up to Palisades Lake for a camping trip for five days.” She also advised, “Drink lots of water. Keep yourself hydrated if you feel sick. Get out of the sun,” said Ellen Volpe.

One woman wasn’t aware it’s expected to reach 100-degrees today, so she’s planning to head to her local swimming pool.

“First of all, drinking water. I know, it’s like everybody says drink water, but it really helps keep your body cool. It’s nice having AC in your car to my car doesn’t have AC. So, make sure you’re getting your AC fixed,” advised Myra Sue.

We asked her how she deals with not having air conditioning in her car.

“I drive with all my windows down. I try not to drive during like the peak of the day when it’s the hottest but kind of just drive home as fast as I can to the cool.”
