Spanish Fork microburst damages trees, property

SPANISH FORK, Utah — A fast-moving microburst dropped into Spanish Fork on Tuesday causing damage to trees and property.

The National Weather Services describes a microburst as “a localized column of sinking air (downdraft) within a thunderstorm.” A microburst can generate high wind speeds to severely damage a surface.
Spanish Fork resident Brian Chandler told KSL TV the microburst, which stormed in at about 2:30 in the afternoon, was sudden and intense.
In some cases, a microburst can reach up to 100 miles per hour, which is equivalent to a mild (EF-1) tornado.
“It was a big microburst. It came down and knocked down a couple of trees in the neighborhood. We got a bunch of hail,” Chandler recounted.

The microburst took out at least one large tree.
“In fact, it took us three giant truckloads to get it [the tree] out,” Chandler said.
