School delays and closures begin as winter storm moves in

SALT LAKE CITY — As of 2 p.m. Tuesday and for the next 24 hours, school delays and closures will pop up as a strong storm moves through the state.

School districts

Canyons School District will transition to remote learning on Wednesday. All schools in the district will be closed for the day.

Box Elder School District announced Tuesday evening that it will implement a two-hour late start on Wednesday. If the weather is too severe, the district says it could switch to a virtual learning day. A decision on that is expected by 5:30 a.m. Wednesday. 

Granite School District announced Tuesday night that the district will move to online learning on Wednesday. 

Jordan School District will be holding a virtual learning day Wednesday, Feb. 22.

Murray School District will be holding a virtual learning day on Wednesday. 

Provo School District announced Tuesday night that its schools will be on a two-hour late start Wednesday.

Salt Lake City School District says any decision on a change in its school schedule won’t be made until Wednesday morning. The district says any changes to the schedule will be posted on social media and messages will be sent to parents. 

Tooele County School District will switch to a virtual learning day on Wednesday. Teachers will prepare their work for students to do online.

Charter and religious schools

Ascent Academy in both West Jordan and West Valley will hold remote learning on Wednessday.

Blessed Sacrament School is closed Wednesday.

Canyon Rim Academy Charter School will be on a two-hour late start in Salt Lake County. School will start at 10:30 a.m.

Judge Memorial Catholic High School and Our Lady of the Lourdes Elementary have canceled classes Wednesday because of the storm.

Northern Utah Academy for Math, Engineering and Science Early College High School says its campuses in Ogden and Layton will be on a two-hour late start Wednesday. School will start at 10 a.m.

North Star Academy will have a two-hour late start on Wednesday in Bluffdale.

Summit Academy School will switch to remote learning for Wednesday.

University closures or schedule changes

The University of Utah is already advising its faculty to move Tuesday evening and Wednesday classes online and also work remotely if possible. 

At Utah Valley University, all campus facilities will be open Wednesday according to a statement from the univesity. However, if travel is unsafe due to the weather, students should check with their professors to determine the status of their classes. 

Faculty members have the option of teaching in person or remotely, while providing the option of online learning an option for those students impacted by the storm.
