SALT LAKE CITY — This ski season has seen frigid temperatures and plenty of snow. However, something is in the mix to lessen snow densities, making for the perfect powder day.
Ski Utah is calling it a Powder Alert.
A Powder Alert means there is 80% forecaster confidence in at least 8 inches of snow.
The alert is for all Utah mountains according to Ski Utah. Utah resorts have accumulated a few inches this season but now, in upper Cottonwood Canyon, 30 inches of fluffy snow may be on its way.
Additionally, according to Ski Utah, a “moist atmospheric river will bring copious moisture into Utah starting Tuesday with heavy snow falling into Tuesday night and Wednesday.” Total accumulations will be 10 to 20 inches.
The higher up you go, the better the snowfall. More specifically, in areas above 8000 feet elevation, colder air will sift into the area on Wednesday while snow density decreases. This will create fluffier snow.
For the Powder Alert, the best powder day will be Wednesday said Ski Utah. However, Thursday will see lots of leftovers and terrain openings.
