Salt Lake City just had its warmest Christmas ever

SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake City had its warmest Christmas ever on Thursday. Despite some colder temperatures on the way, the record-setting could continue, as the National Weather Service predicts December will be the warmest on record.
The high temperature was 60 degrees at the Salt Lake City airport on Thursday. That broke the record of previous record of 59 degrees, set back in 1955.
Senior Meteorologist Monica Traphagan from the National Weather Service said that Christmas weather is in line with the trend Utah has seen all month.
“We are having by far the warmest December that we’ve had on record so far,” Traphagan said. “There’s still a few days left, but it looks like in terms of average temperature, we’re not only going to break the record, we’ll be probably about two degrees more than in any other year on record. And that goes back to the late 1800s.”
She said the overnight low temperatures are also at record highs.
“For the past several days, we’ve had temperatures averaging 20 degrees above normal, across basically all of Utah,” Traphagan explained.
Traphagan said other cities in northern Utah also broke records Thursday.
However, the temperatures are expected to cool down starting Friday. Traphagan said the mountains of northern Utah will likely see six to 12 inches of snow as a series of storms roll in between Friday and Sunday.
