SALT LAKE CITY — The Huntsman Cancer Institute is breaking ground on a second Utah location in Vineyard.
The Huntsman Cancer Institute Comprehensive Cancer Center will provide care for thousands of patients living in central and southern Utah.
According to Nate Hutchinson, managing partner of Utah City, the institute’s location is meant to alleviate long travel for thousands of patients.
“There’s about 40,000 trips a year that are generated at the Huntsman Cancer Institute in Salt Lake from people that live in Utah County and some of these more southern, rural areas,” he said.
The cancer center is part of the Utah City development in Vineyard, and phase one is already underway.
“This first phase is about a $400 million dollar phase,” Hutchinson said. “A really large phase one that will have research and cancer care in the hospital. And then their plan will be to double or triple that over time.”
According to the Huntsman Cancer Institute website, the new facility is located on 19 acres in Vineyard between Interstate 15 and Utah Lake. The new cancer center is expected to open in 2028.
“This isn’t a satellite site for Huntsman Cancer,” Hutchison said. “They’re building a second campus that will be similar in size and scope over time to the campus they have at the University of Utah up on the hill.”
The groundbreaking ceremony takes place Tuesday at 1 p.m.
