Utah likely sets unofficial new record for COVID-19 cases in one day

SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Department of Health reported more than 4,700 new cases of COVID-19 in the state on Friday, possibly surpassing the previous record for cases in a single day.

In a series of tweets, health officials pointed out that number would represent one of the largest numbers of single-day COVID-19 cases in Utah if not a record.

The health department does not release official COVID-19 data on holidays and weekends. Therefore, so we may not know for sure whether the state broke a record until next week. But in light of the high numbers, the agency urged unvaccinated Utahns to seek out the COVID-19 vaccine and encouraged those who did not yet receive a booster shot to do so.
“If you have ANY symptoms, get tested immediately,” the department tweeted, asking people who test positive to stay home and isolate from other people. “And if you’re attending a gathering this weekend, protect yourself and others by wearing a mask.”
How To Prevent the Spread of COVID-19 Coronavirus
COVID-19 coronavirus spreads person to person, similar to the common cold and the flu. So, to prevent it from spreading:
- Wash hands frequently and thoroughly, with soap and water, for at least 20 seconds.
- Don’t touch your face.
- Wear a mask to protect yourself and others per CDC recommendations.
- Keep children and those with compromised immune systems away from someone who is coughing or sneezing (in this instance, at least six feet).
- If there is an outbreak near you, practice social distancing (stay at home, instead of going to the movies, sports events, or other activities).
- Obtain a flu shot.
- Seek out the COVID-19 vaccine.
