Police recover body of 15-year-old boy after house explosion in So. Jordan

SOUTH JORDAN, Utah — South Jordan fire officials said they have found the body of an “unaccounted for” resident after a 2-alarm fire and house explosion on Wednesday afternoon.
Local fire investigators said that a natural gas leak caused the explosion.
South Jordan Fire confirmed the victim to be a 15-year-old male student at Bingham High School. At the family’s request, a name will not be released.
Deputy Chief Ryan Lessner with the South Jordan Fire Department said they were called to the scene around 3 p.m. When they arrived they saw smoke and flames and concluded there had been an explosion.
Lessner said officials didn’t know how many people live in the home. It’s in the area of 10500 South and 3200 West, in South Jordan.
“We’re running down every lead and working with every angle to try and … locate that family member,” Lessner said.
By Wednesday night, the American Red Cross of Utah had responded to the house explosion with food and water for the first responders. The Red Cross will also “assess the needs of other residents affected by the explosion,” the agency said in a news release.

Lessner said several fire investigators were already on the scene.
“From my vantage point, there’s significant damage to the outside of the home,” Lessner said. There is also damage to surrounding homes he said.
Police evacuated nearby homes as a precautionary measure, said South Jordan officials.
