SANDY — A man was rescued Sunday after he was swept away in Big Cottonwood Creek, according to the Unified Fire Authority.
Kelly Bird with the UFA said the group of people came to the creek to do some “cold plunging” when the current swept away a man in the group.
Crews provided the victim with a helmet and a life vest before lowering a crew member with a rescue crane to retrieve him.
After he was hauled out of the creek, the man received medical attention according to Bird.
The UFA is urging the public not to use the creek for recreational purposes due to the water temperature and swift currents.
“The spring runoff is real,” Bird said. “The message is don’t get in the water — it’s that simple.”
