Motorcyclist dies after attempting to pass on US 191 near Moab

SALT LAKE CITY — A motorcyclist died Monday night when he was hit by a truck on U.S. Highway 191 near milepost 116 which is north of Moab in San Juan County.

According to the Utah Department of Public Safety, James Kenneth Braggs, age 79, was traveling on a Harley Davidson on a stretch of Highway 191 that has intermittent passing areas for southbound traffic.
The DPS said Braggs was traveling northbouind in this location when a Chevy Colorado was traveling southbound. The truck crossed the center line to pass a vehicle traveling southbound, and entered the left lane of northbound traffic where Braggs was driving.
The front driver side of the truck crashed into Braggs, who died at the scene.

At the time of the crash, officials said the truck was passing a slower vehicle traveling southbound. At the same time, the motorcyclist had passed a slower vehicle while traveling northbound, entering into the second northbound lane.
The truck driver was hospitalized with suspected minor injuries, the DPS said.
Highway 191 was closed for several hours during the investigation.
