Icy roads cause multiple crashes throughout Utah

SALT LAKE CITY – Several crashes across the Salt Lake and Tooele County shut down freeways Friday morning due to icy road conditions, creating widespread hazards, police said.

 

Southbound Interstate 15 was closed near 14600 south in Bluffdale after a crash, or “possibly separate crashes involving five or six vehicles,” according to Lt. Cameron Roden with the Utah Highway Patrol.

Police were able to reopen the three right lanes in the area as conditions improved, Roden said.

“It is very busy for us right now,” Roden said. “Lots of crashes going on.”

Around 6:56 a.m., the Northbound I-15 lanes were closed as well after a crash occurred in the same area as the southbound lanes. By that time, three right lanes were open in the southbound lanes.

Roden said the roadways were cleared of ice while crews worked to clean up the crashes. Both lanes of travel were open to drivers by 8:19 a.m.

In Tooele County, crews worked to reopen lanes after multiple crashes near westbound Interstate 80 and state Route 36.

“The left lane, both eastbound and westbound, near mile marker 100, will stay closed for a little while,” Roden said. “They have vehicles stuck in the cable barrier and a concrete barrier pushed near the travel lanes of the eastbound side. UDOT will have to respond and get that moved.”

Eastbound I-80 lanes reopened by 6:56 a.m. while a westbound right lane and right shoulder were reopened.

It was not known if anyone involved in the I-80 accident was injured, according to Roden.

 

Another crash in Lehi happened when a single vehicle spun out and rolled after hitting ice on a bridge, according to Lehi Police Department’s Tanner Kirham.

Kirham said the man driving that vehicle was uninjured and the crash was cleared.

Roden urged drivers to slow down and use caution as troopers continued responding to numerous weather‑related crashes across the region.
